Commissioning a Dog Portrait
Your Dog Photos
Photos are a really important part of the commissioning process. The photos you choose to send to us must capture your dogs personality and character well. We usually work from one main photo for the pose, so if for example you would like your dog laying down, with its tongue out looking relaxed then we really need a photo of your dog in that position. If you are taking new photos of your dog for this project try to choose a relatively bright day and take photos in the garden so as to avoid the use of flash.
Once you have your photos, they can be emailed to us or you can send them to us on cd. Please don't reduce their size, we need to see as much detail as possible. If you have prints you can either scan and email them them or send us copies through the regular mail, please contact us for our address. |

The Dog Portrait Mockup
Once a client has emailed or mailed us their photos, Nick and I will take a good look through them, working out the best composition for your portrait, keeping in mind any requirements you have. We like clients to have input into their portrait, often they can visualise what they want, so creating a mockup, similar to the image on the right, really helps us and the clients to make sure we are both thinking along the same lines.
We create all of our mockups in the computer, using photo editing software. As you can see in the three images right and above, this is a commission we created for a canadian client of their family dog Bella. The clients had a lovely photo of Bella in the back seat of their car that they felt really captured Bella well, however they really wanted her outside in greenery and grass, which is where she loves to be.
We did a variety of mockups to show the client how the background could look and the image on the right is the one they opted for. The final painting can be seen above. The soft and subtle hint of grass and bushes behind give a good background to Bella yet it doesn't take anything away from bella, she is definitely the main focus of the paining.
Clients can watch their painting develop on our portraits in progress blog and this way they can always have input into the painting at each stage. |
