This is a very pretty painting for a very pretty dog. Butu was painted back in 2008 for Henry and his wife as a memorial portrait. They had a particular photo they wanted to use of Butu, beautifully brushed, sitting on their patio with lovely flowers and daisy's behind. You can view the photo at the bottom of the page. The original photo as you will see, had some purple flowers, however I decided that there should be an overall warm feel to the painting and so decided to omit the flowers as they were very cold and purple. As you can read from henrys email he was very pleased with the end result. The Dog Portrait Painting in Progress....
Photos are taken during the progress of the portrait in our studio. The lighting can change throughout the day which can account for colour differences between each stage.
The Oil Painting with Detail
We scan the majority of our artwork here in the studio, we have an epson scanner, or for the very large paintings we take photographs of the artwork using a Sony DSLR camera, a tripod and two diffused photography lights. Our scans and photographs are always perfect quality if clients require giclee prints of their hand painted portrait for friends or family.
Client Dog Portraits Reference Photos
Our clients email a range of photographs for us to work with, we use one for the main pose of the portrait and others for detail, backgrounds etc The photographs depicted below may vary in colour to the finished painting above. This can be due to the scanned oil painting being slightly different to the original or often clients give us more than one photo to work from i.e. one for the pose and another for colouring.

We are always thrilled to read our clients emails, we are in touch with clients via email and sometimes via telephone, skype and texts throughout the entire process. Melanie, You've absolutely nailed it. Beautiful.The way you have treated Butu's eyes, they follow one around the room. Terrific. We also like the way you have downplayed the background to draw more attention to Butu, and eliminating the purple flowers which were a bit distracting in the original photos.

The prints arrived on good order. Our housekeeper chose the smaller with which she is delighted, and we brought the larger with us to Montana where we are having it framed to hang at Camp Arrowhead our vacation home. Best regards, Rip

Yes, Melanie, We have chosen a lovely gold frame for Butu's portrait which will probably hang in the living room in close proximity to the work of another of your countrymen - Sir Alfred Munnings.
