Melanie and Nicholas

Welcome to our about us page! Lovely to see you here. My name is Melanie and I work alongside my husband Nicholas Beall and we are professional pet portrait artists, working full time from our garden studio.

Our garden, particularly between Spring and Autumn, is a slice of heaven and its the perfect place for a studio. We have lots of wildlife visiting our garden and we see at different times of year a whole variety of birds, an abundance of rabbits, very naughty squirrels, Tawny owls and bats. The bats even come out in early afternoon to swoop around the garden, they are quite incredible. Our garden also houses our chickens which keep us in eggs all year round. The have a large pen but are often allowed to wander around the garden...until they get into mischief and start dust bathing in my flower beds!

We have a purpose built studio and you can take a look at how we made it on our main website - Studio & Materials It is fully heated 24 / 7 and so it's warm and toasty all year round. Wales isn’t know for its warm dry weather, in fact quite the opposite, so the constant heating is very important to us. As you can see the studio is positioned in our garden surrounded by plenty of trees and its a perfect place to work.

We also share our home with a mischievous Tibetan Terrier called Lily. The photo below was taken in our studio, she sleeps down here with us all day. The photo below that is Lily in Newport Pembrokeshire, on one of our favourite beaches.

We live in an old welsh cottage dating from around 1600's with a large inglenook fireplace and big old oak beams. The photo of the front of our cottage is below. We have been renovating it for the last 10 years and are just about to embark on our final segment of renovations this year - 2017.

Nicholas and myself met at art college around 20 years ago and upon leaving college, started up creating pet portraits for customers worldwide. We both studied Natural History illustration, we both came from the countryside and have grown up surrounded by animals. It seemed the perfect next step in our career. To be able to run our own business, work from our own studio, in a place we love is a dream come true.

We have created portraits for a myriad of clients all over the world, many travelling far and wide to meet us in person. Our door is always open to clients who would like to visit, just give us a call or drop us a line to arrange a time. There is a beautiful country house hotel about 20 minutes drive away from us, which is dog friendly if you need to stay over. They not only allow dogs in the rooms, but upon arrival they will be greeted with food, bowl, blankets, towels and much more. They definitely cater for the dog owner!

As you can read we are very laid back and relaxed. Living in the countryside allows us to make time for us and our dog. We don't have a commute to work, only a little trundle down our garden and Lily follows us and sleeps in a number of beds in our studio, which she calls her own. We both enjoy a healthy lifestyle, we walk a lot, have been to the top of Snowdon and often walk in the mountains in North Wales. Pembrokeshire in South West Wales is one of our favourite places.

Nicholas' favourite pass time is playing the guitar, he has both electric and classical guitars. Whilst Nicholas enjoys playing music, I enjoy getting out in the garden planting and growing flowers and for an indoor activity I enjoy improving my technical skills on web design and SEO. I love gadgets, tech and all things amazing and new! We hope that you have enjoyed our about us page. Please feel free to continue your journey around our website and we look forward to working with you soon on your dog portrait.
