Dog Portraits Studio and Materials

Welcome to our dog portraits studio! As you may already be aware, my name is Melanie Phillips and I draw all of the pencil portraits and my husband Nicholas Beall is the oil painter and he paints the traditional hand painted dog portraits. The photo below is one of Nicholas' latest paintings with his brushes in front. I took a quick snap as I always have my camera handy in the studio. There are always good photo opportunities here!

We work in a purpose built art studio which is heated all year round. In the summer months we obviously don’t use the heating so much, but we live in Wales UK which isn’t really known for its sunshine, its more renowned for its rain! It means we have a lovely rich and lush garden though with lots of plants and flowers.

The photo below shows our fantastic LED lighting in the studio, which is a necessity for working in the dark winter evenings.

Nicholas paints using traditional oils and has a specialist wooden pallet which is balanced inside. Its a pretty big and heavy affair however is perfect for painting his amazing dog portraits. You can see from the photo below a few of his most used brushes and pallet of colours.

I draw my portraits on Italian hot pressed papers which are a beautiful to work one. I use mainly graphite pencils from Derwent. I have an hand wound pencil sharpener which is completely old school but perfect for getting sharp points for fine detail.

We only use the best art materials and order our canvases for each client from a specialist canvas maker here in the UK. They are the best quality canvases we have found and are made of Italian Canvas stretched on Tulip hardwood stretchers. Our canvases are built to last.

The photo shows our sleeping Tibetan Terrier Lily. She isn’t always sleeping, she is quite often getting up to mischief in the garden and loves it when we have the door open in the summer so she can wander in and out as she pleases. In the colder weather she has an enclosed bed under my desk which she likes to cuddle up in.

Both Nicholas and myself have specialist lighting to work by. As mentioned above we live in Wales, UK and the winters here are pretty rainy and dark so it imperative to have good lighting to work by. The panels are LED's and are quite pricey, but worth every penny.
